About

Gabriel Piser is a Masters student at SUNY-Binghamton in the Philosophy, Interpretation and Culture Program. Originally from Philadelphia, he currently resides in Ithaca, NY. In 2004, he became certified in permaculture design, a set of theories and tools for the creation of sustainable human settlement.
In addition to his background in permaculture, he holds a BA in Sociology-Anthropology andhas cultivated a wide range of skill sets that relate to organizational and interpersonal dynamics, social movements, and education. He has experience in consensus process, group facilitation, and team-building strategies for both adults and young people.
In 2008, he became a founding board member of the Binghamton Regional Sustainability Coalition (BRSC). He has offered a variety of workshops for participants at the US Social Forum in Atlanta, Georgia, for activists in Valencia, Spain, for students at various colleges in the Midwest, for community members in Philadelphia, and most recently for attendees at the SUNY-Social Justice Conference at SUNY-Binghamton. He is involved in youth leadership and ecological literacy, local food systems, urban and rural sustainability, and continues working towards a green local economy founded on principles of social justice, ecological resilience, solidarity, and community self-determination. He now focuses on the social ruptures resulting from extraction industries, and how local communities can develop tools to understand, mitigate, and productively engage those ruptures.
